Barry T. Holck, Shihan

1949-

Barry Holck, Shihan was born July 13, 1949 to Dai-Shihan Joseph, and Sensei Amy Holck in Honolulu, Hawaii.  Dai-Shihan Joseph Holck was an instructor in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu at Professor Okazaki's Kodenkan dojo and also one of the co-founders of an eclectic Hawaiian bred martial arts system known as Kajukenbo.

In 1955 Shihan Barry Holck began his formal martial arts training in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu at Professor Okazaki's original Kodenkan dojo in Honolulu.  Professor Okazaki had previously passed away in 1951.

In the summer of 1964 he moved with his family to Tucson, Arizona at the request of  Sensei Roy A. V. Holck, Dai-Shihan's younger brother to take over the Kodenkan of Tucson dojo that Roy Holck, Sensei had opened up the previous year.

In 1965 Shihan Barry Holck received his shodan, first degree black belt in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu from his father now, Dai-Shihan Joseph Holck, through the Kodenkan of Tucson, which later became the Kodenkan Yudanshakai.

In 1966 Shihan Barry Holck began training in Shoalin-szu karate, Kobayashi Shorin Ryu.  In 1968 then received his shodan, first degree black belt in that style of karate.  He continued studying and practicing the Kobayashi Shorin Ryu style for the next five years.

Concurrently he interacted with other martial arts disciplines and in 1969 began training in Hakko Ryu, Aiki-Jujutsu.  In 1970 he also received karate black belt recognition by Seishinkai, Shito-Ryu, Motobu-Kunubi-Ha Karate Do, Japan.

In the summer of 1971 he met and trained extensively with Seijun Kina, Sensei in Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do, Matsumura Seito-Ha.

As a direct result of his past experiences and intense commitment to his training under Seijun Kina, Sensei, Barry Holck, Shihan dedicated himself since 1971 to teaching and perpetuating Matsumura Shorin-Ryu, as it was taught to him by Seijun Kina, Sensei in the Okinawan tradition (Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do Okinawa-Te).

Currently Barry Holck, Shihan holds the ranks of shichidan, seventh degree black belt in karate and hachidan, eighth degree black belt in Danzan Ryu Jujitsu.  Shihan Holck is the Director of the DAIBUDO KODENKAN MATSUNO KENSHUKAI and operates the "Jacobs YMCA Budokai" located at 1010 W. Lind Road. Tucson, Arizona  85730 where he actively teaches both Danzan Ryu Jujitsu and Shorin-Ryu Karate-Do Okinawa-Te, Matsumura Seito-Ha.
