Seifukujutsu Restoration massage therapy developed by Professor H. Seishiro Okazaki, the founder of the Danzan Ryu Jujitsu system. Professor Okazaki was a firm believer that one of the virtues of Jujitsu was its techniques of restoration from disabling blows. To come full circle in the arts as an instructor, one should be able to cure as effectively as he could kill. In keeping with the traditions inherited from our many teachers the KODENKAN of Phoenix dojo only teaches these skills to Black Belts, unless there is a special need that dictates otherwise. Restorative Massage Therapy has been utilized and practiced in Japan for over twelve hundred years. The practitioner of this art in Japan is entitled to the same rank as Doctor. It is a combination of massage, chiropractic and osteopathy, reducing and care of bone fractures, dislocation and sprains, etc. The name "Seifukujutsu" means "adjustment and restoration techniques". Professor Okazaki studied several methods of Japanese massage and therapy. He also studied the western systems of massage. In 1929, Professor Okazaki moved back to Honolulu from Japan for the second time and opened the Okazaki Adjustment and Restoration Clinic, which would eventually be called the Nikko Restoration Sanitarium. At the same time, he opened his "Kodenkan" dojo, "ancient tradition school" in the back of the clinic, while still testing and improving his healing system. People came in droves to the Sanitarium with so-called incurable nerve disorders, including President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Incidentally, President Roosevelt offered Professor Okazaki a job at the White House as his private therapist, Professor Okazaki not wanting to leave the islands, declined his offer. His clinic is still in existence today and run by his son, Hachiro Okazaki at 801 S. Hotel Street in Honolulu. The KODENKAN of Phoenix dojo does not have classes preparing students to instruct these skills to others. These skills are taught only as sharing techniques to other yudansha, as the late Professor Carl Beaver, Shihan Joe Holck, and many others shared their knowledge with us long ago. It is our way of repaying their kindness to us. Those wishing to seek Instructor credentials in these skills should contact the AJI, American Jujitsu Institute, or Professor Tony Janovich, senior student of the late Professor Kufferath. They can be reached through the links provided on the liks page. They both have excellent programs for those interested in teaching Seifukujutsu. Seifukujutsu can be used on most everyone and requires considerable " hands-on" practice and critiquing from an qualified instructor in order to be proficient, and not cause harm to those upon whom you practice your skills.
